You are invited to the 3rd Humanities Today Lecture, featuring poet and activist George Elliott Clarke and singer Julia Tynes, and pianist Simon Docking. The Humanities Today lecture series is a free, public event that highlights the benefits of the humanities for the public good, outside the confines of the university. This year, George Elliott Clarke's lecture is titled "The Discipline of Poetry," in which he will explore his own poetic development through his roots in Halifax. Pop and soul singer Julia Tynes, with pianist Simon Docking will perform four of Clarke's poems set to music.
The lecture will be followed by a book launch of "Each Life a Poem," an anthology of writing that celebrates the 20th anniversary of Halifax Humanities. Since 2005, Halifax Humanities has offered free, accessible, transformative courses in literature, art, and philosophy to adults who face barriers to traditional education.
All are welcome to this evening of poetry, music, and celebration!
The Humanities Today Lecture Series is held in the memory of Renate Usmiani, a professor of the Department of English at Mount St. Vincent University, remembered for her support for and teaching of the humanities.
