Genizar@ Market

Thursday, August 13th, will kick off with a dance performance at 6pm by Unbound Lineage, a Genizar@ dance collective.
This is a place for those who don't quite fit in at NDN Market, because their work isn't traditional enough or there weren't enough spaces available at the other markets, or quite simply aren't part of a federally recognized tribe. As the gallery is indoors, on the lower level, I will host a few artists for a pop-up during "Indian Market" weekend.
Genízaro Market, a satellite event during Indian Market is an attempt at fostering inclusion toward those who do have native ancestry and identities yet lack formal recognition due to historical circumstances. As a genízaro himself, Diego explains how discovering his roots has affected his creative journey: “Identity has played a part in my art for as long as I can remember. Growing up I mainly identified as Chicano and I’ve constantly asked myself what that means for my art, whether it’s prose, poetry, photography, painting, or mixed media pieces - and what was appropriate for my identity. Learning that one of my great great grandfathers wasn’t “adopted” as I’d been told, but actually bought as a child has both opened a wound and helped start to fill a part of me that always felt missing. My art is a reflection on my deep ties to the land, the culture, and the people that make up what is now known as the state of New Mexico.”
