John W. Neth III will be our speaker at the next edition of Genealogy Day on Saturday, July 27th. He will be speaking on the Scots-Irish and the American Revolution as well as showing off all his goodies.
His bio below:
My father was in Europe during WWII so being born in 1947 I’m part of the post war baby boom. So I’m a “Boomer”. My father was a minister of the Christian Churches ( Churches of Christ) and after the war he studied theology and library science. I say this because we moved around a lot. We moved to Milligan College in about 1952 and I attended Happy Valley Elementary School for 1st, 2nd, and third grade. Grades 4-9 a little complicated. We moved to Big Stone Gap Va in 1962 where I attended Powell Valley High, graduating in 1965. I attended Milligan College beginning in the summer of ’65 and graduating with a BS in Biology in 1968. I had wanted to major in Bio and Chem and minor in History but graduated in 3 years so History was out. I attended the Ohio State University in Columbus Ohio and received a Masters degree in Zoology ( Wildlife Biology ) in 1971. Due to the Viet Nam war there were no jobs so I went back to Milligan and became certified to teach 8th -12th grade science ( all areas of science ). I taught in Groveport Ohio at Groveport Madison High School for 30 years. After retiring I took a job as a Science Consultant with the Ohio Department of Education , my job was helping develop the new State Science Course of Study and examining all test items for accuracy. I stayed there a couple years and then went to Worthington City Schools as the Science Teacher Leader helping them adapt to the new state Standards. I spent a little over a year and a half and due to budget shortfalls and myself having an income I volunteered to be the one laid off. So real retirement started in 2004. My wife retired in 2005 and we became legal residents of Tennessee that year. In 2013 I became a member of the Tennessee Society of the Sons of the American Revolution and began studying more about the Militia and Longhunters. In 2016 I began teaching a class at Milligan College entitled Flora and Fauna of the Southern Appalachians. This is a Saturday class which is done in the field. I do presentations of the Revolutionary War Soldier at various locations in the area. My wife and I have been married for 53 years, have two children and 3 grandchildren.
