Create exciting and dynamic drawings inspired by the natural world
Make exciting and dynamic drawings inspired by the seasonal natural world. We will wander the woodland to make swift sketches, take bark rubbings and bring back leaves, stones, twigs, lichen and berries to make a nature table. Using natural materials such as charcoal, earth pigments and ink, we will start with a collaborative excercise, then move on to individual studies. A workshop for adults of all abilities to learn new techniques and enhance existing skills.
Workshop Tutor - Sophie Woodhouse
I have a B.A. and M.A. in arts and have taught and lectured in art and craft for around 25 years. I am most interested in the connection between art and nature, sketching directly from the natural world and using natural history as the inspiration for printmaking and design. I believe that studying the landscape, flora and fauna about us, we can heal ourselves and be moved to protect nature.
Above all, art can be sociable, playful and experimental.
Severn Gorge Countryside Trust
This workshop is being hosted by the Severn Gorge Countryside Trust, a local charity.
The Trust’s aim is to promote, protect and conserve the living landscape of the Ironbridge Gorge World Heritage Site, which has a diverse range of habitats, including wildflower meadows, woodlands and heathlands. But that’s not all! We maintain over 20 kilometres of footpaths, conserve and protect 60 historic structures, run exciting Outdoor Learning and Volunteering Programmes to encourage local people and visitors to engage with the natural environment in a variety of ways.
All proceeds from this workshop will support the work of the Severn Gorge Countryside Trust.

Our Outdoor Learning Programme for 24/25 is an opportunity to immerse yourself in the environment through creative workshops and walks. Whether it’s letting your creativity flow, encouraging you to enjoy the simple pleasure of spending time outside in nature, or learning a new skill, there is something for everyone!
Engaging with nature has been well demonstrated to have positive effects on both mental and physical wellbeing. We hope that this in turn promotes the desire to protect and preserve the natural environment, for present and future generations.
