Please join us in-store for a book talk, reading and signing with author, Gary May. Gary will be in the store presenting Unburdening. Gary May is a former newspaper writer and editor who turned his skills to producing books. Now, after a dozen works of non-fiction, including several that told the world how the modern oil industry began in Lambton County, Gary has produced his first novel.
That novel is Unburdening. It follows a family of Irish immigrants who defy the primitive conditions of 1840s Ontario to establish a successful apple farm. Unburdening is a five-generation saga that pulls back the covers on a tale of love, guilt and redemption.
Gary’s visit to Sarnia represents a homecoming of sorts. It is here where his reporting career began in 1974 for The London Free Press. It was an experience that sparked a curiosity that has led to his recognition as an authority on the early Canadian oil industry. This has earned him accolades from Canada, the United States and Europe, including a Lifetime Achievement Award from Canada’s Petroleum History Society.
After his time in Sarnia, Gary went on to cover politics at Queen’s Park and on Parliament Hill before becoming an editor for The Free Press and later The Ottawa Citizen.
Born in Grimsby in the Niagara Region, Gary attended Carleton University. He now lives in Windsor with his wife, Linda Mondoux.
