Volunteers are invited to gather at the Boettler Park pavilion on Saturday, May 2, starting at 8 am, to help us wage war on garlic mustard by removing the invasive species from Southgate Park, 5300 Massillon Rd. The removal of garlic mustard has led to increased diversity of native species in our parks.
This event is a friendly competition between Green, Put-in-Bay Township Park District, the Lake Erie Conservancy, Portage County Park District, South Bass Island, and Stark Parks to see who can eradicate the most Garlic Mustard.
Volunteers are working in natural areas and are encouraged to wear long pants and long-sleeved shirts; bring garden gloves, bug spray, and if necessary, sunscreen. The city will provide water and snacks for all volunteers as well as trash bags to place the garlic mustard. Volunteers are welcome for any duration of time. This event is rain or shine.
Volunteers receive a brief training provided by our partner, EnviroScience, on how to identify and remove garlic mustard and other invasive species. EnviroScience staff will be onsite throughout the Garlic Mustard War to provide training for all volunteers.
