"Ganesha's big stomach symbolizes the true spiritual seeker’s unappeasable hunger to know the Truth. His big ears represent sraddha--the capacity of a seeker to 'hear,' to imbibe, the subtle spiritual principles. An elephant can uproot a huge tree with its trunk, and it can also pick up a small needle. So, Ganesha’s trunk signifies the seeker's ability to grasp both gross and subtle principles. Ganesha is said to ride atop a mouse. The mouse represents selfish desire. Just as one small mouse can destroy an entire crop, a single selfish desire can destroy all of our virtues. However, the individual who has fully assimilated Self-knowledge [symbolized by Ganesha] has complete mastery over his mind and desires. That is why Ganesha is said to ride on a mouse. At other times, the mouse sits at the feet of Ganesha, gazing intently at the his face, without touching the sweets that are kept in front of him. This means that the enlightened soul is the lord of his own mind--his mind will only move at his command. We should strive to develop these qualities." --Amma
