A 45-min gallery talk on Persian miniature painting. 15 seats. $10 credited to purchase.
About this Event

Feruz Temirov, a contemporary artist from Bukhara, Uzbekistan, revives the centuries-old tradition of miniature painting.

This art form became prominent in the 13th to 16th centuries in what was then Persia, ultimately spreading to modern-day Turkey, Iraq, Iran, Afghanistan, Uzbekistan, and India.

Bukhara, being one of the main Silk Road hubs, became a center of miniature art, as well as mathematics, poetry, astronomy, medicine, and philosophy. And that's why Feruz's subjects are the poet Omar Khayyam, the polymath Al-Biruni, the Mughal Emperor Amir Timur, the poet Hafez, the folk hero Hodja Nasreddin, and the astronomer Ulugh-Beg.

In this talk, Max, the gallery owner who met Feruz in Bukhara, will talk about:

  • The history of Bukhara and the Silk Road
  • Feruz and his approach
  • Miniature process: from mulberry paper to lapis lazuli
  • The subject of his work and how they influenced our world today

I'll show videos from Bukhara showing how Samarkand paper is made, plus footage from my trip there in October 2024, when I met Feruz at his gallery in the old city.

Forty-five minutes. Fifteen seats. $10, credited toward anything you buy.

About the artist:

Feruz Temirov is an artist and painter from Bukhara, one of Uzbekistan’s ancient cities.

After graduating from the Faculty of Music and Fine Arts at Bukhara State University, Feruz decided to specialize in Uzbek miniature and teach this art major at the same university. During his academic career, Feruz opened a private gallery in the old city of Bukhara, creating miniatures and compositions on various topics: the Great Silk Road (caravan), famous scientists and travelers in history, the Tree of Life, and more.

In his work, Feruz uses ancient silk paper, modern Samarkand mulberry paper and brushes made of natural materials. The process of creating miniatures is complicated and time-consuming: it requires perseverance, great patience, a steady hand and keen eyesight, as well as the artist's boundless imagination.

It is a great achievement and a great happiness for me if the miniatures I create will please not only modern art lovers but also future generations,” says Feruz.

The artist has participated in international exhibitions around Europe, traveling to Austria, Germany, France, Italy, and Switzerland.
