The Galette des Rois (King’s Cake) is a traditional French pastry of creamy frangipane enjoyed on January 6th, during the celebration of Epiphany, which marks the arrival of the Three Kings in Bethlehem.
Fun Fact: Inside the galette, a small figurine called a fève (originally a bean) is hidden. The person who finds the fève in their slice is crowned king or queen for the day and wears a golden paper crown that comes with the galette!
Why Do the French Celebrate It?
The tradition dates back to Roman times when a bean was hidden in bread during the Saturnalia festival, symbolizing the end of the winter solstice and the return of light. The custom was later adopted by Christians to celebrate the Epiphany, symbolizing the Three Kings bringing gifts to baby Jesus.
Today, the Galette des Rois is a fun and delicious way to bring family and friends together while continuing this centuries-old tradition.
