About this Event
Gabriel Zacharias, born and raised in São Paulo, Brazil and now based in Calgary, is an artist who embodies the essence of his country’s music: the syncopated rhythms of Samba, the sophisticated harmonies and melodies of Bossa Nova, and a style that is both refined and accessible. His Bossa Nova quintet pays tribute to Brazilian classics written by Antonio Carlos Jobim, presenting this music in its most authentic form—played on nylon-string guitar with lyrics sung in the original Portuguese.
In this performance, the group will honor one of the best-selling jazz records of all time: Getz/Gilberto, recorded in 1963. This landmark album popularized Bossa Nova worldwide, selling over one million copies. It was widely acclaimed by critics, earning the Grammy Award for Best Jazz Instrumental Album, and in 1965 became the first non-American release to win Album of the Year.
In the first set, the quintet will perform the album note for note, featuring timeless classics such as “The Girl from Ipanema” and “Corcovado.” The second set will be a tribute to other Brazilian music icons, with works by Dorival Caymmi, João Donato, and Marcos Valle.
