Saxophonist Gabriel Sánchez Porras and pianist Elizabeth Loparits will present a program showcasing saxophone and piano music from Latin America, with special emphasis on music from the Caribbean region. The program includes music from Colombia, Cuba, and Uruguay drawing inspiration from the region’s rich and diverse rhythms.
Gabriel Sanchez Porras is a Costa Rican saxophonist and music educator, and Assistant Professor of Saxophone and Jazz Studies at the University of North Carolina Wilmington. He holds a Doctorate in Saxophone Performance and Pedagogy from the University of Iowa, where he studied with Dr. Kenneth Tse and served as a Teaching Assistant in Jazz Studies, as well as an MM from Ball State University and a BM from the National Institute of Music of Costa Rica.
He has performed across Argentina, Brazil, Mexico, El Salvador, Colombia, Guatemala, Cuba, France, Switzerland, and the United States, with appearances at festivals including Montreux Jazz Festival, Cosquín Rock, FNA, FIA, Sax Fest Costa Rica, ALASAX, and the North American Saxophone Conference. His awards include 3rd prize at the 2017 ALASAX Classic Saxophone Competition in Cali, Colombia, and 2nd prize at the 2019 Yucatán Pan-American Classical Saxophone Competition in Mexico.
In Costa Rica, Gabriel has performed with the National Symphony Orchestra, Philharmonic Orchestra, Youth Symphony Orchestra, Cartago Municipal Orchestra, San José Concert Band, La Big Band de Costa Rica, New Jazz Project, Isla Tambor, and Un Rojo Reggae Band, sharing the stage with artists such as Armando Manzanero, Debi Nova, Ismael Serrano, and Joaquin Yglesias. He is a Yamaha Performing Artist and performs exclusively on Yamaha saxophones.
Elizabeth Loparits is an active performer and educator, currently serving as Lecturer
and Collaborative Pianist at the University of North Carolina Wilmington; pianist and
coach with Opera Wilmington; and a pianist/organist at St. Stanislaus Church.
Elizabeth has given solo and duo piano recitals in Hungary, Costa Rica, and the United
States. Recent solo performances include the UNCW Piano Masterworks Series, Rush
Hour Concerts, Lumina Festival, Kenan Chapel Recital Series, as well as with the
Wilmington Symphony and Opera Wilmington Orchestras. As a chamber musician, she
recently performed at the Southern Exposure New Music Series, the North American
Saxophone Alliance Conference, the University of Miami, Chicago College of
Performing Arts, the Ronald Sachs International Music Competition, and collaborating at
a competition winner’s recital at Weill Recital Hall, Carnegie Hall.
With pianist Phillip Bush, she recently performed the world premiere of Meira
Warshauer’s Ocean Calling Trilogy for Two Pianos (2022) a work they subsequently
recorded with Navona Records.
Elizabeth holds a Chamber Music Artist Diploma and Music Education degree from the
Franz Liszt Academy of Music in Pécs, Hungary, a MM in piano performance from
Illinois State University, and a DMA in piano performance from the University of North
Carolina at Greensboro.
Doors Open at 1pm with a performance by local student musicians.
