Join Prairie expert, Suzanne Tuttle to explore this tract of prairie on the south-southeast edge of Benbrook Lake/Corps of Engineer property. Meet at the gravel pullout, on the right, after crossing the railroad tracks. Note, the pullout is not very large, it is recommended that folks consider car-pooling to limit the number of cars.
This field trip will be held on the 3rd Friday of the months February thru June. The meet-up times for April, May and June will be 8:00 AM. The meet-up times for February and March will be 9:00 AM. Suzanne plans to arrive about 15 minutes before the start. Binoculars or any other special equipment are not necessary.
The field trip will last approximately 1.5 hours, but Suzanne will stay longer if the day is very birdy. The trail is an uneven gravel road. Please wear appropriate footwear and clothing for the weather conditions. There are no facilities on the property, but there is a McDonalds within 7 minutes.
Please note, if venturing to this area on your own that there is no shade and annual hunting seasons from September thru January. There are two separate entrances. The first one, where we meet, leads to a gravel road and moderate walking conditions. The second one leads to an undulating narrow trail on which tick spray is recommended. Good for an out and back or loop, but the loop is not obvious. The first parking area is popular for fisherman, on weekend mornings it can be full. There are no bathrooms or signage (yet).
