Future Town Planners -drop in Workshop

Who designs the future? If the future belongs to children, then why aren't they involved in the planning process?The Future Planning Committee challenges communities to consider who has a say in the future of their spaces. We are often fed slogans like 'the future belongs to children' while the important decisions about the future of our local communities and societies are taking place behind locked doors. The Future Planning Committee addresses the injustice that children are rarely if ever consulted on the future, when in reality they are the ones who will see it.Supported by the Hugo Burge Foundation, performance maker Katrine Turner has created a participatory installation for primary school aged children, 'The Future Planning Committee'. Inspired by town planning techniques, 'The Future Planning Committee' gives children the opportunity to think deeply about the future through a series of fun tasks and prompts.

The relaxed installation invites local children to take on the role of town planners. Through video, prompts and support from the facilitators, the children will add to a growing town plan/ sculpture of an imagined future Glasgow. The installation focuses on empowering young people about the real genuine changes they can make to their surroundings and at the same time challenging traditional town planning techniques that don't consult or consider local communities- and definitely not children!

Katrine Turner is a performance maker working with theatres, schools and communities across Scotland. With a background in devised performance and installation, her creative output often focuses on systems, crisis and excess. Katrine has a keen interest in co-creating work with children and young people and has led co-creation projects for Imaginate, Cove Park and Stellar Quines. Her work has been programmed by Summerhall, Tramway, Camden People’s Theatre, English Theatre Berlin and the CCA.
