Author and artist Carl Gawboy makes history come alive in his book, "Fur Trade Nation: an Ojibwe’s Graphic History." In this presentation, Carl will discuss the hidden power of “unconventional” historical sources, e.g. oral tradition, contemporary art, hunting practices, and illustrations; as well as how this research method includes the stories of people who have been left out of the historical narrative.A respected Elder and enrolled member of the Bois Forte Band of Chippewa, Carl Gawboy is an artist, college professor and author, former high school art teacher, and covert comics creator. “Fur Trade Nation,” tells the history of the Great Lakes region from a fresh perspective that is deeply grounded in Ojibwe culture and highlights the importance of women, mixed race, and queer people in sharing history.
