About this Event
Aloha! My name is Ben, founder & funguy of Mālama Mushrooms. Mālama is the Hawaiian word for 'protect, preserve & nurture' and this serves as the standard for all the work that we do as a Hawai'i-based superfood & gourmet mushroom company.
I'll be in LA next week with a few other Hawai'i business owners doing at a three-day pop-upevent called the Aloha Marketplace. The event is a marketplace for Hawai'i based businesses and also has a bit of programming with panels & presentations. You can check details here
At the pop-up, I'm giving a talk on the fascinating world of fungi and the mushrooms of Hawai'i on Sunday September 22nd at 12:45 PM upstairs. Putting the Event on here for any mycophiles that are interested.
I will do a quick intro into mycology & fungi and then get into some of the work we're doing with the Mushrooms of Hawai'i.
What: Fungi & Mushrooms of Hawai'i Presentation by Ben Lillibridge
When: Sunday, September 22nd, 12:45 PM
Where: ALOHA MARKET LA (upstairs room), 1511 Abbot Kinney Blvd, Los Angeles, CA 90291
Cost: FREE! Just show up!
Presentation Information: Hawai'i is home to a high number of rare endemic species of plants, insects, birds, etc. Mushrooms are no exception, yet have received relatively less attention & scientific work to the other organisms here.
Since the publication of "Mushrooms of Hawai'i" in 2002 by Don Hemmes & Dennis Desjardin, many questions have been posed & little to no additional follow-up work has been done.
Unfortunately, no institution, academia or otherwise, is dedicated to studying these rare, and in many cases, endangered fungi. All the while, the arrival of introduced species is occurring. Even more, what potential novel compounds are found in these mushrooms that could be therapeutics & medicine?
This talk explores what we know about the mushrooms of Hawai'i, but more importantly, what we don't!
Presenter Information: Based in Kona, Hawai'i, Ben Lillibridge is the founder of Mālama Mushrooms, a family-owned, superfood mushroom company for health & wellness, as well as the Hawai’i Fungi Project, along with his co-founder Jeff Stallman, a non-profit, community-science initiative devoted to the study & preservation of the mushrooms of Hawai'i. Ben & Jeff received two grants from the North American Mycoflora Project (now called Fungal Diversity Survey) to submit 100 collections of mushrooms from Hawai'i for molecular work. What were their findings? See you this Friday to find out!
