All day Firefly Bookstore will be donating 15% of our sales to support the Widoktadwen Center for Native Knowledge. The funds will be used toward books, games and supplies for their cultural resource center and a variety of community programs. Please stop by! From 12pm to 6pm they will have a table set up to share information, as well as offering a small craft for children and coloring pages, and a planned story time. November is Native American Heritage Month, also called American Indian and Alaska Native Heritage Month, which is a nationally recognized time to celebrate the cultures, traditions, and contributions of Native Americans. The month was established in 1990 to honor the first peoples of the United States, raise awareness about tribal nations, and recognize their history and ongoing impact on the country.
From the About section on the Widoktadwen Center website:
"Our mission is to promote the visibility of Native Americans in Berks County and beyond through community education, leadership, and activism. In order to place Indians in the present day, we must change the false narratives surrounding the colonization of North America in order to accurately represent American Indians in formative education. Once our children have been taught that there is nothing to say about Indians after 1900, learned the stereotype of the Plains Indian atop a horse and wearing a war bonnet, and learned that American Indians have faded away into history, it’s hard for them to see Natives in any other light. We envision a community within Greater Berks that embodies Native values and sees and celebrates the real contributions of Native people throughout history and in the present day."
Widoktadwen Center for Native Knowledge is a Section 501(c)(3) organization, exclusively for charitable and educational purposes. Widoktadwen Center for Native Knowledge’s specific purposes shall include: promoting the visibility of Native Americans by partnering with educational institutions, using digital communication, and participating in community events to educate and make accurate and authentic information available to everyone, ultimately improving social outcomes for Native Americans and their communities.
