As many of you know, Shawn isn't just a Flagler Beach police officer-he's a caring father, devoted husband, loyal friend, and the kind of man who leaves a lasting impact on every life he touches. Whether on duty or off, Shawn has a way of making people feel seen, valued, and respected—a gift that defines him equally as a sergeant and as a friend.
On October 18, while riding home along A1A, Shawn was involved in a serious motorcycle accident. We're grateful beyond words to be writing this in the present tense, reaching out for support instead of sharing memories. There was a razor-thin line between me writing this message and writing a eulogy. Shawn's injuries are extensive: fractures in his legs, feet, and neck, a ruptured Achilles, and bruising to his lungs. He's already spent many days in intensive care, and his journey forward will demand every ounce of resilience he has, with complex surgeries and months of rehabilitation ahead.
There are moments that divide our lives into before and after, and that divide us into who we were and who we become. In the wake of near tragedy, everything else fades, and we are left only with what truly matters: the people we love, the preciousness of each day, and the gratitude we feel for moments we once took for granted. Shawn has always lived in this spirit, giving everything he must to protect and serve our community.
And now, we have the chance to stand by Shawn, to carry him forward in gratitude and strength. Every day, every second we're still here is a chance to start over again. In that spirit, we have the opportunity to come together for someone who's always shown up for others. Shawn's life is proof that how we begin matters-whether it's our days, our weeks, or our friendships. Let's help him start his road to recovery, with a community that has his back as surely as he's had ours.
