COME ON DOWN TO THE FARMERS ARMS FOR THIS COUNTRY SOUL MUSIC WEEKENDER LOOKING AT THE ROOTS AND PROGRESSIONS OF NORTHERN SOUL AND IT’S CULTURAL REVERBERATIONS…Weekend event at the Farmers Arms we have basic camping available in our fields surrounding the pub. We also have rooms available to book via our website. £30 weekend ticket, £50 with camping, £60 with camping and breakfast
Programme as follows:
Friday 27th
arrival from 4pm – there will be a mini bus shuttle from Ulverston train station
4pm Film screening Wattstax 1972 – a nostalgic insight into the politics of Los Angeles featuring Jesse Jackson, Richard Prior and vox pop vignettes as well as live musical moments from the Stax roster. Perhaps the star of the show being Rufus Thomas.
6pm Talk What is Soul? Adam Sutherland looks at the origins of the art form, the Function at the Junction of the coming together of multiple cultures, a moment of collision between rural and urban, white and black, church and nightclub, men and women.
7pm onwards DJs across three rooms
Saturday 28th
9 – 10am Soul Breakfast (much like a full English but with grits)
10 am Workshop – the art of DJ – talks, demos and practical application
11am Talk Steve Smith on northern synergy, the fellowship of trades
12 – 3pm Dining room – Open decks – bring your own vinyl open deck session
Lunch – pizza oven or cafe
2pm – 4pm Graphics and printing workshop, T shirts, bags, badges
Graphics collection proto exhibition – please bring images of your favorite graphic moments, record labels, covers, posters and any related ephemera, for display and the starting point of a proper exhibition for the future
3pm Ulverston high school brass band play funk greats
4pm Screaming Festival – a talk about screaming in soul and gospel followed by the inaugural Annual Farmers Arms Screaming competition. All welcome from babies to angry old men. Screams will be judged on musicality, volume and conviction.
3 – 12am DJ sets from Lucienne Cole (Crawdaddy!SoulClub) and Steve Cato (Inner City Blues) plus special guests…
Sunday 29th
9-10am soul breakfast
10 am film screening Sweet Sweet Badass Song 1971 Melvin Van Peebles
10 – 12noon Music for hangovers
1pm Soul food special Sunday lunch
