Fun & Games Fall Concert

Throughout history, games have brought people together, whether through childhood play, friendly competition, storytelling, fantasy or, in more recent decades, the immersive worlds of video games. Music has always been part of that experience.
The Quincy Concert Band will explore these themes as it presents “Fun and Games” at 2:30 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 8 in Quincy Junior High School’s Morrison Theater. Free admission, donations accepted.
"Music is woven into so many of the moments that bring us joy," said QCB Music Director Dr. Trent A. Hollinger. "It can instantly transport us back to a childhood video game and serves as a soundtrack to most of our favorite memories. ‘Fun and Games’ celebrates the many ways music has been part of our entertainment and our lives. Audiences will hear favorites like ‘Super Mario Brothers’, laugh as all our percussionists perform on typewriters, hear the band sing, and even witness every musician performing with a rubber chicken. We hope everyone leaves with a smile."
Mixing classic wind band repertoire with contemporary works and familiar music from gaming culture, the performance will not only include themes from “Super Mario Bros.” but also “The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, “Assassin’s Creed III” and “Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons.”
Our featured work, “Dance Movements” by Philip Sparke is an award-winning composition that reminds us that dance itself is a kind of game — organized movement, energy and interaction.
The performance will also feature “March of the Cute Little Wood Sprites” from P.D.Q. Bach, Julie Giroux’s “Riften Wed,” Leroy Anderson’s “The Typewriter,” and “The Great Rubber Chicken Galop.”
