Celebrate Labor Day weekend with a tour exploring labor & industrial history!
Chicago for Chicagoans is thrilled to announce a walking through the legendary Fulton Market District. Led by industrial historian and preservationist Erica Ruggiero, this adventure will awaken you to the magic of vintage industrial properties.
Beginning at the Morgan Green/Pink Line stop, we'll explore the history, architecture, and development of an area that spent generations providing Americans with pounds & pounds of fresh produce and processed meats. Discover stories of the city's first stockyard, its numerous 19th-century municipal market halls that bustled with activity, and infamous labor strikes that led to the 8-hour workday we all enjoy today. The tour will take you past dozens of historic, red-brick warehouse and manufacturing buildings that sprung up around Chicago's first railroad, and have remained hospitable enviornments to important businesses and industries for the last hundred years. After the tour, participants are encouraged to join the group for a locally-brewed beverage at District Brew Yards!
Chicago for Chicagoans happily exists as a "pay-what-you-can" tour service. A suggested tip of $10-20 per person is always appreciated, but reviewing us on Yelp, liking us on Facebook, spreading the word, and attending future tours tells us how much you love us too! We are a certified 501(c)(3) nonprofit that creates inclusive walking tours by & for Chicago residents, designed to represent the histories of all Chicagoans.
