About this Event
Join us for the seventh event in From Zayton to New York, a concert series dedicated to the musical cultures of different immigrant communities in New York and across the United States.
This program features Oghlan Bakhshi (Mohammad Geldi), one of the leading torchbearers of Turkmen traditional music in the U.S. Born and raised in the Turkmen community of Gonbad-e Kavoos in northeastern Iran, he trained under master musicians from an early age. At ten, he was ceremonially recognized as “Oghlan Bakhshi” (“child bard”) by a council of Turkmen masters—a rare honorary title that continues to define his artistic identity.
Oghlan Bakhshi has brought Turkmen bardic music to festivals and world-music stages across Asia, the Middle East, Europe, and North America. His recent album Journey Across the Steppes was selected as one of the Top 100 World Music Albums of 2023–2024 by the Transglobal World Music Chart.
At Beef Up Noodle, he will perform a wide repertoire from the Turkmen bardic tradition—including a number of songs he has never before performed in New York. The program spans romantic and heroic epic poetry, contemporary lyrics, and expressive instrumental works for the dutar, the iconic two-stringed lute of the Turkmens. Through songs and stories of various regional styles, this concert offers a rare opportunity to experience the depth, beauty, and regional diversity of Turkmen bardic heritage.
