Mixing personal narrative and historical documentary, (1996) traces Wendy Oberlander's discovery of her father's wartime experiences. Exiled from Austria in 1938, interned in Britain in 1940, and deported to Canada, this story remained in the shadows of family life until a chance encounter in 1991.
--
๐๐ต๐ช๐ญ๐ญ (๐๐ต๐ช๐ญ๐ญ๐ฆ - 2001) looks back to the world of assimilated Jews in Berlin before World War II. A poetic montage of archival footage unravels the filmmaker's inheritance of her mother's story. With original music by Lori Freedman and Peggy Lee.
--
Both films examine the construction of memory and history, Jew and nation - layering images and narratives that reveal a complex and silent story, one that is all too familiar today.

A multi-discipline artist, Wendy Oberlander explores the hidden, working with materials and methods that stimulate both the sensory and the cultural imagination. The archive remains a source of much inspiration, as do patterns, found objects, letter forms and the natural world. Oberlander's award-winning work has been exhibited in museums, galleries, film festivals and public institutions across North America and in Europe. Projects have been generously supported by Canada Council, BC Arts Council, National Film Board and the Fulbright Scholars Program, among others.
