A Vancouver Street Photography Experience

Welcome to the seventh edition of The Photographic Assignment.
We begin at 7:00AM, just as the first morning light starts to reach Strathcona. I have chosen this neighbourhood and this time very deliberately. At this time of year, the sun begins illuminating Strathcona only a few minutes after breaking the horizon, creating a brief period of low, warm light, long shadows, glowing streets and rapidly changing colour while much of Vancouver is still waking up.
Strathcona has been photographed for generations. Its historic homes, storefronts, laneways, gardens, weathered buildings and industrial edges contain traces of Vancouver’s past alongside a neighbourhood that continues to change. Over the course of the morning we will move through three distinct areas of Strathcona, giving you time to photograph independently before coming back together to discuss the changing light, shadows, colour, composition and photographic possibilities around us.
In many ways, we will be walking in the footsteps of photographers who have photographed Vancouver for more than a century. The goal is not to recreate their photographs, but to look at the same streets with our own eyes and photograph the neighbourhood as it exists today. Being in the right place at the right time creates the potential for something great to happen.
Before the walk, each participant may choose a photographic assignment at one of four levels: Easy, Moderate, Advanced, or Journalist. Think of it as a point of departure, a direction, challenge, or visual problem designed to help you look a little more carefully and notice photographs you might otherwise pass by.
The assignment is entirely optional. You are equally welcome to simply walk, photograph freely, ask questions, and spend the morning with a group of like minded photographers. It is there as guidance, not a rule.
Join Andrew Legere, fine art photographer, photographic educator, and owner of Legere Fine Art Services, for a guided three hour photography experience through Vancouver. Throughout the morning, Andrew will work directly with participants on light, composition, anticipation, approach, and the decisions that shape the photographs we make.
We will finish around 10:00AM near Union Market. Anyone who would like to stay afterward is welcome to join us for coffee or something to eat and continue the conversation.
Following the walk, each participant will select one photograph to be professionally produced as a hand finished 8 × 10 inch archival print on heavyweight 100% cotton fine art paper. We will gather again on Sunday, November 1 for the Print Reveal, where photographers from multiple walks come together to receive their finished prints and see the photographs made by the wider group. A photograph changes when it becomes a print.
It slows us down. It asks us to look more carefully. It becomes something physical, something to be held, displayed, revisited, and experienced beyond the screen.
We believe a photograph is not complete until it exists as a print.
Part One: The Photographic Assignment

Every edition of The Photographic Assignment begins with an objective.
At the start of the walk, each participant is offered a photographic assignment designed around the location, light, and environment we will be exploring. The assignment provides a direction, challenge, or visual problem to work through, encouraging a more intentional way of seeing and photographing.
Following a brief introduction, we will begin photographing through Strathcona as the morning light moves across the neighbourhood. The walk is designed to give you time to work independently, follow your own interests, and come back together throughout the morning to share observations, ask questions, and discuss what we are seeing.
Andrew will provide guidance on observation, composition, timing, light, anticipation, and visual storytelling while helping participants develop their own approach to the assignment.
The assignment is never mandatory. Think of it as a point of departure rather than a set of rules. Sometimes allowing one simple idea to influence how you photograph can reveal a great deal about your own way of seeing.
Assignments are available in four categories:
Easy
Moderate
Advanced
Journalist
This is a small group experience focused on learning, experimentation, and creating stronger photographs with greater intention.
Following the walk, each participant will select one photograph and submit a digital file for professional printing.
Part Two: The Print Reveal & Group Discussion

Location: TBA
Participants from multiple photowalks will gather for a Print Reveal social and group discussion. Each selected photograph will be professionally produced as an 8 × 10 inch archival fine art print on heavyweight 100% cotton paper, allowing participants to experience their work beyond the screen and in physical form.
Together we will look at the photographs, talk about the assignments, and discuss the decisions that shaped the final images. The reveal is also an opportunity to see how different photographers responded to different places, light, and photographic problems.
Attendance is optional, and the event is primarily social. Prints may be picked up during the reveal or mailed directly to participants who are unable to attend.

Who This Is For
Open to everyone, from complete beginners to experienced and professional photographers.
Street photography has no single approach. You may find yourself documenting moments, working with light and shadow, studying colour and composition, or observing the city in a more abstract way.
Digital cameras, film cameras, and phones are all welcome. If you are photographing on film, your selected image will need to be developed and scanned for digital print submission.
