About this Event
Online lecture & Hands-on workshop at Seattle Central Library with Post Image review
A camera captures light, but a photographer captures a story. What makes an image linger in the viewer's mind? How do you move past simply documenting a scene to creating an image that evokes emotion and curiosity?
Join Brian Leary of Light Source Journeys for this inspiring workshop designed to change the way you see. Open to photographers of all experience levels, this class focuses on the creative decisions that turn a standard photograph into a compelling narrative.
We will be using the stunning architecture and atmosphere of the Seattle Central Library as our canvas. Brian will guide you on how to slow down, open your mind, and use the building's unique interplay of light and humanity to craft images with intent.
What You Will Learn
•The Elements of Story: How to use color and contrast not just for aesthetics, but to set a mood and direct the viewer’s eye.
•Intentional Composition: Techniques to organize a chaotic frame and give your subject a clear voice.
•The Open Mind: Learning to let go of preconceived notions and see the potential in abstract forms and quiet moments.
•Visual Impact: Moving beyond "correct" exposure to create compelling imagery.
Online Zoom Lecture | Tuesday, April 28 | 5:00pm - 6:00pm PT | The Narrative Eye We begin with an online session where Brian will break down the components of visual storytelling. We will discuss how great photographers use light, geometry, and color theory to communicate ideas. This session will prepare your "mind's eye" for the location shoot. The lecture will be recorded and sent the following morning, and will be available for 30 days.
Seattle Central Library Hands-On | Sunday, May 3 | 10:30am - 12:30pm PT
Meet as a group on the corner of Spring Street & 4th Avenue before we move into the Seattle Central Library to explore one of Seattle's most visually distinct buildings. The library offers incredible opportunities for storytelling—from the dramatic architectural lines to the quiet human moments among the stacks. Brian will be with you to help you find your story and refine your composition in real-time.
Post Shoot Critique & Review (Zoom) Note: This session is vital for storytelling growth. We will reconvene online to review the work created at the library. Brian will provide constructive feedback on your images, discussing how well the composition and technical choices supported the story you were trying to tell.
Requirements & Gear
Experience Level: Open to all levels. Whether you are a beginner (with working knowledge of their gear) or a pro, this class focuses on creativity and vision rather than technical drills.
Gear: Any mirrorless or DLSR camera is welcome.
Lens Suggestion: A versatile zoom or your favorite prime lens will work well in the library environment.

About your instructor:
Brian Leary was initially exposed to photography while spending time with his father in a color darkroom, and began developing his own photographic interests when he moved to the Pacific Northwest as an adult. Brian has pursued his unique style and talent for photography over the past twenty-plus years in the industry. Today, he still uses the same methods with digital photography that he would have on film.
What sets Brian apart is not only his work as a photographer but his passion to share his knowledge of the art form with others. He has a unique talent for breaking down complex subjects and communicating techniques that not only make sense but stick in practice! Brian Leary founded in 2013 and now runs individualized tutoring workshop sessions that address each photographer’s specific needs and pain points. Brian focuses one-on-one attention so that his clients learn specific abilities to turn their photography aspirations into a reality. He is the kind of instructor you want to work with: a teacher who loves watching people light up when they get a great shot, especially when it’s a shot they didn’t think they could capture.
