From Scene to Care: Understanding the Forensic Nursing Role

Texas Health’s Forensic Nursing Program (Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner – SANE) provides specialized, trauma‑informed medical‑forensic care for individuals impacted by sexual assault and interpersonal violence. This education event is designed for healthcare professionals, EMS, and law enforcement to strengthen understanding, collaboration, and response across disciplines.

Participants will learn about the role of forensic nurses in providing compassionate patient care, conducting sexual assault medical forensic examinations, preserving evidence, and supporting the justice process—while prioritizing survivor safety, dignity, and choice. The session will highlight best practices in trauma‑informed care, clarify what happens during a forensic exam, and explore how coordinated response between medical providers, first responders, and law enforcement improves outcomes for survivors and communities.
