Prof Joseph Manning MBE: University of Leicester

Professor Joseph Manning currently serves as Professor of Nursing and Child Health at the University of Leicester and Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust, where he holds a joint clinical-academic appointment. Professor Manning’s career is distinguished by his mission to optimise the experiences, outcomes, and lives of children, young people, and families who access acute care.

A trailblazer in his field, Professor Manning was the first registered children’s nurse in the UK to be awarded a National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) Integrated Clinical Academic Lectureship, marking him as a leader in advancing paediatric nursing research and practice. His research portfolio is methodologically diverse and clinically focused, addressing critical evidence gaps in harm-free acute care, healthcare transitions, and optimising health outcomes and survivorship for paediatric patients and their families. He was part of the team that first conceptualised Post Intensive Care Syndrome in pediatrics (PICS-p) which is the globally adopted framework for survivorship following critical illness. He has led and collaborated on major national and international studies, securing over £12 million in competitive research funding.

Professor Manning’s is the Nursing President-Elect of the European Society of Paediatric and Neonatal Intensive Care (ESPNIC). His work has been recognised with prestigious honours, including the Chief Nursing Officer for England Gold Lifetime Achievement Award and appointment as a Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) for services to nursing.
