From Quaker Witness to Patriot Resolve: Women and the Revolution in South Jersey

When the Revolution reached South Jersey, Quaker families who had sworn never to take up arms suddenly had to decide where they stood. On Sunday, October 4 at 3 PM, Dr. Jen Janofsky brings their story to Richwood Academy's historic classroom: the women who kept the farms running and the families fed while the fighting closed in, and who weighed their faith against their country.
Janofsky is the Giordano Fellow in Public History at Rowan University and director of Red Bank Battlefield Park, where in 2022 she helped lead the dig that uncovered the remains of Hessian soldiers lost since 1777. She has built her career on the human side of the war, the people behind the muster rolls, and she tells this story as the nation marks 250 years since independence.
The Cultural Center is at 836 Lambs Road in Richwood, with on-site parking. The [concert/lecture] will be livestreamed and archived on the Harrison Township Historical Society Facebook page and posted to YouTube.
Admission is free with the support of the Gloucester County Cultural and Heritage Commission at Rowan College of South Jersey in partnership with the New Jersey State Council on the Arts/Department of State and National Endowment for the Arts and the New Jersey Historical Commission/Department of State.
