About this Event
You’re now in Australia.
You passed your English test (IELTS or similar).
But real conversations — whether at university, internships, or work — still feel challenging.
Are you an international student or early-career professional who:
- has passed an English test
- is now studying or working in Australia
- but still feels unsure in real communication situations?
Especially in contexts like:
- University lectures, tutorials, presentations and seminar discussions
- Workplace settings: interviews, meetings, small talk
Do these situations feel familiar?
- You know what you want to say, but can’t express it naturally
- You struggle to find the right wording in the moment
- You understand slow speech, but fast, connected speech feels difficult
- You understand others, but struggle to respond in real time — sometimes freezing on the spot
- You feel your professional communication skills are “off”, but don’t have the right support or environment to improve
In this session, we’ll work through three stages:
1. Understanding the problem (Why you feel stuck)
- Why test-based English doesn’t transfer to real communication
- The gap between “knowing English” and “using English”
- What’s actually happening when you can’t respond in real time
2. Guided practice & interaction
- Short, structured speaking prompts based on real scenarios (uni & workplace)
- Focus on:
a. responding in real time
b. expressing ideas more naturally and appropriately
c. pair / small-group discussion (low pressure, supportive environment)
3. Feedback + open Q&A
- Feedback on common communication patterns observed in the session
- Open discussion:
a. your specific situations (tutorials, interviews, meetings, etc.)
b. questions from different academic and professional backgrounds are welcome
What you’ll walk away with:
- A clearer understanding of why you feel stuck
- A more practical way to approach real-world communication
- Immediate strategies you can start applying
About the guest lecturer:
Yilin Z.
