By the end of the Great War, America’s film industry had emerged as the largest in the world. A key part of that success was Hollywood’s ability to attract talent from other countries, bringing in new expertise and creativity while simultaneously weakening their foreign rivals. The German film industry in particular produced many great directors who were later lured to Hollywood, and in this course we will focus on three of the most notable – Ernst Lubitsch, Fritz Lang and Douglas Sirk. Through complete films and numerous extracts, we will compare their work in Germany to their later films in the US. From comedy classics to epic fantasy, film noir and lush romantic melodrama, these three visionaries created some of the most outstanding films of the 20th century.
