About this Event

Discover the fundamentals of herbarium work with our one-day hands-on course. Study how to collect, prepare, mount and incorporate plants into your collection using professional techniques and materials. Gain knowledge of how to clean, maintain and repair historic herbarium specimens. Perfect for beginners, students and non-specialist Natural History curators, this basic course will guide you through the entire process—from curation, maintenance, field collection to creating well-preserved specimens for scientific study and conservation (non-IUCN kind!). Join us and learn how to care for and add to your herbarium with confidence!

To facilitate the training of this NatSCA workshop we are very lucky to have enlisted the help of:
· Rachel Webster: Senior Curator – Natural History and Curator of Botany at Manchester Museum
· Yvette Harvey: Keeper of the Royal Horticultural Society’s Herbarium, Wisley
· Nina Davies: Herbarium Curation Manager at the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew

We will be hosted at Leeds Discovery Centre and it will be a full day with tea/coffee provided. Attendees can bring their own packed lunch, avail themselves of Tesco Express or the couple of cafes that are a short walk away. Leeds Discovery Centre is a 25-minute walk from Leeds train station and the main bus station.

Members: £60 - please email [email protected] for your membership code.

Non-members: £80 - you can join NatSCA for £20, the price difference between this course’s member and non-member rate; you could then enjoy benefits such as further training discounts, our lunchtime chats once a quarter, the excellent journal and a discount to our annual conference! To find out more please email [email protected].
