About this Event
Juries are central to Victoria’s justice system. Jurors are the deciders of fact, the voice of the community, and they ensure transparency in our justice system. Having the opportunity to serve on a jury is both a privilege and a responsibility afforded to all Australian citizens.
Juries Victoria, together with the County Court of Victoria, are excited to invite you to experience the law in action. The Juries Commissioner will summons you to the Melbourne jury pool room, and you will participate in an interactive ‘mock’ selection of a jury, presided over by a judge of the County Court.
How it works:
· Register to attend. Spaces are limited to the first 100 registrations
· Juries Victoria will email you a mock summons
· Arrive at County Court at 9:45am, clear security, 'check-in' for jury service, and attend jury pool orientation
· After the orientation, a jury panel will be randomly selected for the mock empanelment and trial
· Everyone will attend the courtroom, where a judge and judge’s associate will conduct a ‘mock jury empanelment’, before the judge instructs the jury of twelve on the facts of a case for their deliberation and verdict
· Not selected as one of the twelve jurors? You’ll be able to observe the jury process in real time, ask the presiding judge questions, and see if you come to the same conclusion as the jury
· The session will end with an opportunity for Q&A with the judge, the associate and the Juries Commissioner.
Please note that you must be over 16 years of age to register.
If you work with the Courts please do not register through this platform. Please email the County Court Communications Team directly to express your interest in attending.
