About this Event
Berlin by Foot
with Nils Philipp
This two-hour walking tour approaches the centre of East Berlin as an architectural record of the ideological tensions within the German Democratic Republic.
In the GDR’s capital, the ambitions and contradictions of a bureaucratically managed socialist state become legible in the very fabric of the city. The urban landscape reveals successive attempts to reconcile political ideals, administrative planning, and historical identity: from the early reconstruction of the Baroque core around the Staatsoper Unter den Linden and the Staatsratsgebäude, to the modernist ambitions along Karl-Marx-Allee and at Alexanderplatz, where projects such as the Haus des Lehrers embodied the promise of a new socialist metropolis.
This vision gradually gave way to a more functional phase of urban development, shaped by an intensifying housing crisis and exemplified by projects such as the Rathauspassagen, reflecting the increasingly technocratic logic of large-scale planning and administration. In the final decade of the state, prestige projects such as the Nikolaiviertel introduced a carefully staged historicism intended to lend the capital cultural depth and symbolic continuity.
By tracing these architectural layers—from reconstructed state institutions and modernist avenues to functional complexes and decorative historic quarters—this tour explores how ideology, urban planning, and everyday life intersected in the capital of the GDR, revealing a city shaped as much by administrative pragmatism as by political aspiration. Highlights include:
- Staatsoper Unter den Linden (State Opera)
- Staatsratsgebäude (State Council Building)
- Karl-Marx-Allee
- Alexanderplatz
- Haus des Lehrers
- Rathauspassagen
- Nikolaiviertel
