Guest Speaker: James Dowd, author of the new book, “THE WHITE FUND of Lawrence, Massachusetts”
"My book includes a near complete list of the lectures dating from 1864 to 2024. The list is intended to invite analysis of the intellectual and recreational entertainment brought to Lawrence for the edification of her citizens. I have also included museum quality slides of the seventeen paintings owned by the White Fund in trust for the people of Lawrence; and, of course, the story of their source. I include a bibliography of their appearance in art history books as well as an itinerary of their travels to world renowned museums." ~ Jay Dowd
In Lawrence today we find the names of the first White Fund Trustees, Charles Storrow, Henry K. Oliver, and Nathaniel G. White, on streets, schools and plaques. Not so for Trustee Rowell. Judge Wilbur E. Rowell served the White Fund for forty-six years beginning in 1899. During his tenure, the White Fund expanded its reach and influence in a manner enabled by benefactor Daniel Appleton White whose 1852 philanthropy set the trust in motion. In 1941, Judge Rowell chronicled the White Fund story deeply rooted in the City of Lawrence’s history. His manuscript went unpublished, and now more than eighty years later, the story is told in the pages of this book. His name, in print, will now endure as do the names of his predecessors.
