It still stands as one of the most recognizable and highly demanded design elements in pointed pen calligraphic works. In this course we will go over a concise version of its history and learn to use dip pens in order to form the basic strokes of its construction.
This course is geared towards beginners but those with more experience may attend it as a refresher course and I do my best to teach to the level of each individual in the second half of the course (plus it’s always nice to have experienced attendees help).
The course is $70 for the 3 hours and includes all the tools (nibs, holders, papers, handouts). Attendees are welcome to bring their own supplies for use if they wish. I also encourage attendees to bring a pencil and ruler with them. Hope to see you there!
Pre-registration and payment are required.
Supply List:
All materials are provided, including paper, nibs, nib holders, and a comprehensive instructional packet.
Attendees are also encouraged to bring their own ruler and mechanical pencil if possible.
Participants can simply arrive ready to learn—everything needed for the class is supplied. Best of all, all tools and materials are yours to keep at the end of the workshop!

Italic (also known as Cancelleresca or Chancery hand) was developed for its perfect balance of speed, elegance, and readability, making it an ideal entry point for aspiring calligraphers and a versatile tool for modern applications.
In this Introduction to Italic Calligraphy workshop at the Baltimore/Washington International Pen Show 2026, Nikola will guide participants through the essential elements of this timeless script: proper tools and setup, posture and pen grip, fundamental strokes, and forming beautiful lowercase letters. Whether you’re picking up a fountain pen for the first time or looking to refine your technique, Nikola’s patient, hands-on teaching style ensures you’ll leave with confidence and practical skills.
Beyond calligraphy instruction, Nikola’s work restoring and selling vintage pens connects students to the rich material culture of writing, deepening their appreciation for the craft.
Join Nikola Pang and discover why Italic script remains one of the most beautiful and useful calligraphic styles—perfect for beginners and a foundation for lifelong practice!
