Alsace has flip-flopped between French and German ownership, but has remained part of France since World War I. Alsace sits on the eastern slopes of the Voges Mountains, which create a rain-shadow effect and produce one of the driest climates in France. There are 51 Grand Crus of Alsace that sit along a thin strip on the eastern slopes of the Vosges.
2022 Weinbach Sylvaner $39.94
The Weinbach estate was built in 1612 while vines were planted in the 9th century. More modern winemaking begins in 1898 when it was acquired by the Faller brothers, who then passed it onto Theo, their son/nephew. He worked diligently for Alsatian quality wine and his own wine. In 1979, his wife and daughters, Catherine and Laurence, took over and applied the same passion and care into the wine and quality. It is now run by Catherine and her sons, making it a 4th generation family run winery. This is their sylvaner, one of the grape varieties allowed to be varietally labeled for Alsace AOP. This comes from 60-year-old vines from their monopole vineyard Clos des Capucins. A monopole means they own the entire vineyard. It drinks at just 1.7g/l of sugar, almost as dry as it gets!
2020 Pierre Sparr Schoenenbourg Riesling $43.94
Grand Cru riesling?? YES PLEASE! Pierre Sparr was established in 1680 and is now a 9th generation estate. The grapes are sourced from just three rows of vines within the Schoenenbourg Grand Cru, located on a steep hillside. Riesling is one of the highest acid grape varieties, which makes it extremely food friendly since acid is a natural accompaniment to fat, spice, salt and sugar. It has a touch of residual sugar to balance out the soaring acid.
2021 Weinbach Les Vignes du Precheur $31.94
Heading back to the iconic Domaine Weinbach estate, who is organically and biodynamically farmed. This is their white blend of five co-fermented grape varieties: 40% riesling, 30% auxerrois, 20% pinot gris, 5% muscat and 5% sylvaner. The grapes are sourced from the Precheur, or "Preacher" vineyard, that sits just below the famed Grand Cru Kaefferkopf. It is fermented and aged in large, old, neutral oak and finishes at just 3g/l of residual sugar.
2019 Hubert Meyer Gewurztraminer $24.94
Hubert Meyer has a winegrowing family tradition dating back to 1722. Currently, it is run by Hubert and his son Pierre. Gewurztraminer is one of the four noble grapes of Alsace. The noble grapes are the white grapes riesling, pinot gris, muscat and gewurztraminer. Gewurztraminer is an aromatic variety and exudes a floral flavor profile with spice undertones. This is just 5g/l of residual sugar, so it drinks rather dry compared to the off-dry examples often found in Alsace.
2022 Kuentz-Bas Pinot Noir $27.94
Kuentz-Bas was established in 1795. In 2004, it was sold to famed vigneron Jean-Baptise Adam, who is a fourteenth-generation winemaker. When he took over, he lowered yields and implemented organic and biodynamic viticulture. Current winemaker Olivier Raffin compared Alsace to Burgundy, drawing parallels between the soil type and pointing out that Alsace is a continuation of Burgundy further North. Therefore, this pinot noir has depth and structure.
2021 Albert Mann Pinot Noir Grand H $109.94
This is going to be epic!!! This is Albert Mann, a collaboration of two families that have been growing wine since the 17th century. The grapes are from the Grand Cru Hengst, one of the few Grand Crus that varietal pinot noir can be produced from in Alsace. They have implemented biodynamic viticulture since 1997 and the vines are over 40 years old.
