2022 Clos Lapeyre Jurancon Sec $19.94
We are starting in a region in Southwest France called Jurancon. It sits just below Armagnac in Gascony, right on the border of the Pyranees Mountains and Spain. This wine is coming from Jurancon Sec AOP, an appellation for dry white wines, made from the grape gros manseng. Clos Lapeyre has been a winery since World War I and is the first winery to replant their vines on terraces in a semi-circle fashion, like an ampitheatre, to maximize sunlight exposure. This has become a very common practice in the Jurancon since they started the trend.
2021 Jean-Claude Berrouet Herri Mina Irouleguy Blanc $39.94
Staying in Gascony now, the region Irouleguy sits right on the border of Spain on the French side of Basque Country. This is Jean-Claude Berrouet, one of the most acciamed winemakers in the world. He is a native of Irouleguy, however, he left for 30 years to be winemaker at....Chateau Petrus. He was pulled back to his hometown and started making wine from indigenous varietals from the area. This is a blend of gros manseng, petit corbu and petit manseng. The vines sit on the south facing slopes of the Pyranees Mountains at high elevation. The name "Herri Mina" is the local dialect for "country home-sick".
2020 Domaine Robert Serol Cote Roannaise Perdriziere $36.94
The Cote Roannaise sits just west of Beaujolais, in central France. Like Beaujolais, this is gamay territory, as the region only permits reds and rose made from the grape. The clone is called Gamay St. Romain, a particular clone that has smaller berries than the gamay in Beaujolais and a peppery flavor profile. Domaine Robert Serol is organic and biodynamic. It is 20-50% whole cluster aged 11 months in wooden tank.
2022 Chateau de Vaux Les Hautes-Bassieres Pinot Noir $27.94
Now we are heading far north to the Moselle, France's northernmost wine region. It sits on the border of Germany and the wine region covers both sides of the Moselle River (turns into the Mosel River in Germany) as it runs north into Germany. Chateau de Vaux is a castle in the Moselle that was built in the 16th century. In 1999, a husband-and-wife team fell in love at first site with the property and recognized the potential. This is 100% pinot noir, one of only two wines that they make. They are biodynamic and vegan.
2019 Georges Vigouroux Chateau de Haute-Serre Cahors $32.94
Now we are heading back South to Cahors, a region that sits southeast of Bordeaux. Malbec is the original grape of Cahors, having grown there for over 2,000 years. It is mandated to be a minimum or 70% of the blend. The Georges Vigouroux is 100% malbec featuring whole bunch fermentation. It is so dark purple that it is almost black. Georges Vigorous resurrected Chateau de Haute-Serre after it was devastated by phylloxera in the 1970's. The famous California winemaker, Paul Hobbs, collaborates on this wine project.
2021 Chateau Tour Des Gendres Cantalouette Bergerac Rouge $21.94
Now to a region called Bergerac, which sits between Bordeaux and Cahors along the Dordogne River. Similar to its neighbor Bordeaux, the reds are mandated to be 75% of the Bordeaux varietals cabernet sauvignon, merlot, cab franc, and malbec. Chateau Tour des Gendres is a 3rd generation family run winery that is now one of the flagship estates in Bergerac. Barrels aren't used at the estate, therefore, wines that need longer aging are put into 30hl "tuns" which look like oval barrels. The tuns allow the fruit and freshness to be maintained while producing silky tannins. This is the "Cantalouette" bottling, a blend of 50% merlot, 25% cabernet franc, and 25% malbec.
