About this Event
Learn the fundamentals of oil painting and unleash your creativity with our new Introduction to Oil Painting workshop. Whether you're a complete beginner or have some experience with oil painting, this class offers a comprehensive foundation to develop your skills as an oil painter in a welcoming environment.
Led by the painter Audrey Fattouche, you'll learn the fundamentals of oil painting and embark on a journey to discover this rich and versatile medium. During three guided lessons, we will cover essential techniques such as colour mixing, brushwork, and composition, empowering you to grow as an artist.
With personalised feedback and supportive guidance, you'll gain confidence in your abilities and receive personalised instruction and guidance fostering a supportive and collaborative learning environment.
Working from observation, we will experiment with still lifes and our goal will be to produce one painting capturing light, shadow, and form to create a realistic and expressive representation of your subject.
The workshop consists of three sessions:
Fridays 5th, 12th and 19th JULY
10.00am- 1.00pm (on-site)
1. Introduction to Oil Painting Materials:
- Explore the various materials and tools used in oil painting, including types of brushes, palette knives, surfaces, and oil paints.
- Learn about different types of oil painting surfaces and their characteristics.
2. Colour Theory and Mixing:
- Dive into the fundamentals of colour theory, understanding concepts such as hue, value, saturation, and temperature.
- Practice colour mixing techniques to create a wide range of colours and achieve the desired tones and shades for your paintings.
- Experiment with creating harmonious colour palettes and understanding how to use colour to evoke mood and atmosphere in your artwork.
3. Basic Techniques and Composition
- Discover essential oil painting techniques and explore different brushstrokes and brush techniques to create texture and depth.
- Study the principles of composition and design, including elements such as balance, rhythm and focal points.
- Explore how to arrange and organise visual elements to create an engaging and dynamic composition.
4. Critiques and Feedback:
- Participate in constructive critiques and receive feedback from the instructor and fellow classmates to improve your skills and artistic vision.
- Gain confidence in expressing your artistic voice and making intentional creative choices.
During the course we will be working on a A3 or A4 oil paper, and with a modern split primary palette, composed by 6 colours plus white: Titanium White, Ultramarine Blue, Prussian Blue or Phthalo Blue, Cadmium red, Alizarin Crimson, Cadmium Yellow, Cadmium Yellow Pale or Cadmium Lemon. If you don't have this palette with you, we sell Michael Harding colours in the studio at competitive prices.
About Audrey Fattouche
Audrey is a French-British full-time practising artist who lives and works in London.
She studied at the Royal Drawing School and teaches life drawing at the Dulwich Art Group.
Audrey primarily works in charcoal, pastel and oils. She also lived in Japan where she studied the traditional art of calligraphy and developed a strong interest in ink painting.
