Freshkills Park: BICP Level 1 Mountain Bike Workshop with SI Trail Riders

Join the Fresh Park Alliance and the Staten Island Trail Riders for a FREE BICP Level 1 Mountain Bike Workshop at North Park Phase 1 in Freshkills Park!

This course introduces stability and biomechanics, teaching strategy, site selection, goal setting, proper demonstrations, keywords, progressions, and error detection for all the level 1 Fundamental Skills.

The Level 1 workshop offers comprehensive hands-on training on the fundamentals of mountain biking. All participants will create a foundation for mountain bike skills including personal riding skills, proper form, systematic methods, and terminology.

After the couse, Freshkills Park staff will take you behind the scenes to ride areas that are currently closed to the public. On this ride we will explore via mountain bike the woods, wetlands, and grasslands at Freshkills Park.

Please, note all riders must provide their own mountain bike and helmet for this program. Helmets are required to enter and ride NYC Parks and DSNY property.

Donation: This bike class and tour is donation-based and we suggest a $20 donation per participant, but we understand everyone is in a different position to give and thank you for whatever you can. Your donation supports the education, programming, and research at the Freshkills Park Alliance and makes programs like this possible.

Accessibility: This ride will be approximitely 1 miles. The roads and trails themselves can be uneven at times. If you have any accessibility needs, please let us know in advance so we can best accommodate you.

Plan Ahead: Be “tick aware” and “weather aware.” Wear appropriate clothing, including close-toed shoes and sunscreen. Stay hydrated and make sure to bring water with you. All participants will be asked to sign an activity waiver before entering the park. Those under 18 need to have the waiver signed by a parent or guardian and be accompanied by an adult.

Location: We will meet across from the composting comfort stations (restrooms) in North Park Phase 1. Gates to North Park Phase 1 are located at 350 Wild Ave (parking lot entrance) and at Schmul Park (behind the baseball field). From here, we will walk together to North Mound.
