Everyone is invited to the Tonganoxie Community Historical Society free 4th Tuesday Meeting.The Tonganoxie Community Historical Society will host journalist and historian Cindy Higgins with her programs “Fresh Produce: Kansas’s Orchardists, Market Growers, and Truck Farmers.” This program will explore Kansas’s commercial specialty crops, agricultural experimentation, horticultural “royalty” marketing, and the evolving local foods movement. The presentation will also focus on Kansas’s nationally known heritage apple, the crabapple king’s downfall, successful gardening techniques of freed slaves and the state’s connection to exotic fruit introduction, future outlooks for Kansas agriculture, and county-specific produce projections.
