Freeform Lantern Workshop (2 evenings, must attend both)
About this Event
Over two days, design and build your very own three-dimensional lantern — in any shape you can dream up. On Day 1, sketch your design and construct the frame using materials like wire, bamboo and sticks. On Day 2, bring it to life by applying coloured tissue paper to complete your creation. All materials are provided, including LED lights to illuminate your finished lantern.
This workshop is led by artist Yoko Tomita, whose whimsical freeform lanterns — including animals and other nature-inspired forms — have delighted attendees at the Renfrew Ravine Moon Festival for over 20 years.
No previous art experience is needed. However, this workshop is suited for adults and older teens, as the techniques used require manual dexterity and patience.
Sliding Scale Tickets

- This is a 2-day workshop. Attendance on both days is required to complete your project.
- Day 1: Tuesday, September 8th, 6 PM to 8 PM
- Day 2: Wednesday, September 9, 6 PM to 8 PM
- Location: Slocan Community Hall | 2750 East 29th Avenue, Vancouver, BC V5R 6C2
- Age: This workshop is designed for adults and is not suitable for young children.
Getting There
- Slocan Community Hall is located in Slocan Park, just a short walk from 29th Avenue SkyTrain Station.
- The hall is also easily accessible by bus via the routes serving the 29th Avenue area.
- Limited street parking is available in the surrounding neighbourhood.
- We recommend walking, taking transit, riding your bike, or carpooling when possible.
Accessibility
- The hall is located within Slocan Park and is accessed via a pathway through the park.
- Wheelchair access is generally possible, though portions of the pathway may be more difficult to navigate after heavy rain.
- Please contact the organizers in advance if you have specific accessibility needs so we can help ensure the best possible access.
