Art Labs are artist-led workshops connecting young audiences with artists, artmaking and the National Gallery collection.
In this Art Lab, join multidisciplinary artist and designer Yuriyal Bridgeman for a workshop inspired his work in the exhibition Bilong Papua New Guinea.
The program will start with a tour of Bilong Papua New Guinea, which marks the 50th anniversary of Papua New Guinea’s independence.
In this exhibition, traditional styles and contemporary artistic practices merge in the works of artists including Yuriyal Bridgeman, Mathias Kauage, Gazellah Bruder and John Siune. Learn about how artists have brought together diverse communities including Yuriyal’s work to honour cultural practice through the re-contextualisation of the Kuman (shield) tradition as a form of self-portrait.
After the tour, join Yuriyal in the Learning Studio to design and make your own body-sized shield, drawing on ideas about identity, protection, and self-expression.
All art materials provided.
What to Bring:
Comfortable clothes that can get messy and are suitable for artmaking.
