"Free to Be...A 1960s Fashion Revolution" is the current special exhibit at the Johnson County Museum. This groovy exhibition takes visitors on a captivating journey through the vibrant world of 1960s women's fashion via four distinct themes that symbolize the era's spirit of self-expression and cultural transformation. "Our Free to Be..." speaker series helps give historical context to the social movements of the 1960s.
"Power to the People!: Civil Rights Activism and the Freedom Struggles of the 1960s"
The 1960s bore witness to multiple quests for freedom. Black, Latinx, Asian American, Indigenous, LGBTQ, and women activists organized mass movements nationwide demanding an end to discriminatory practices, access to the ballot, quality education and social services, equal employment opportunities, community control, and inclusion into American society. Through protests, marches, direct action, cultural celebrations, and grassroots efforts, ordinary people arduously fought against oppression and injustice. They ultimately transformed American politics, society, culture, and economy for decades to come.
This presentation will examine movements and protests of the 1960s and their local manifestations, highlighting how multiple groups endeavored to secure the promise of American Democracy for all.
