From the pages to the silver screen! The City of Peoria is excited to announce the lineup for the free Book to Screen Film Series, where local moviegoers can enjoy five classic films adapted from novels.
Screenings begin at 11:15 a.m., on the second Saturday of the month, from July through October, in the Willow Room of the Peoria Main Library, 8463 W. Monroe Street.
Every screening begins with a short introduction and wraps up with a post-film discussion led by Jeannie Berg, Film and Media Production faculty member within the Arts & Humanities Department at Glendale Community College.
August 8– Murder on the Orient Express (1974)
Aboard a train from Istanbul, a passenger is found murdered and famed Belgian detective Hercule Poirot steps up to determine which of the other passengers is responsible. The victim, who just the night before had asked Poirot for protection, turns out to not be who he seemed. Film cast: Albert Finney, Lauren Bacall, Ingrid Bergman, Sean Connery, Martin Balsam. Based on the novel by Agatha Christie.
September 12 – The English Patient (1996)
Nine Oscars---including Best Picture---went to this superb romantic WWII drama starring Ralph Fiennes. Juliette Binoche plays a compassionate nurse who takes her horribly injured, amnesiac patient (Fiennes) to a monastery to die in peace. A book the man carries reveals the story of his life before the war and explains the chain of events that brought him to his fate, including his affair with a married woman (Kristin Scott Thomas). Willem Dafoe, Naveen Andrews, Colin Firth.
October 10 – Sherlock Holmes (2009)
Sherlock Holmes puts his strength and intellect to the test as he teams with Watson to battle Lord Blackwood, a formidable new adversary who is determined to destroy England. Film cast: Robert Downey Jr., Jude Law, Rachel McAdams, Mark Strong, Eddie Marsan.
November 14 – A Christmas Carol (2009)
This adaptation of Charles Dickens' holiday classic features Jim Carrey in the role of Ebenezer Scrooge, as well as the ghosts of Christmas past, present and future. The miser is paid a visit by each so that he may learn the value of holiday spirit before it's too late. Film cast: Jim Carrey, Bob Hoskins, Gary Oldman, Colin Firth, Leslie Zemeckis.
