About this Event
Step into the story of Notting Hill's Windrush legacy on this powerful 90-minute heritage walk.
Trace the footsteps of Caribbean settlers who transformed this neighbourhood after World War II—from their arrival and early struggles to the birth of Europe's largest street festival.
Funded by Kensington and Chelsea Council's Black History Month Grants Scheme.
What You'll Discover:
Historic sites of migration and resilience – Walk the streets where new arrivals built families and communities, and learn about pivotal moments including the 1958 race riots and the M**der of Kelso Cochrane that galvanised a generation.
Places of resistance and activism – Understand the Mangrove Nine's stand against police harassment and how grassroots organising shaped the community.
The birth of Carnival – Hear how a movement of cultural celebration grew from humble beginnings into the iconic Notting Hill Carnival we know today.
Living heritage – Experience the Caribbean culture—music, food, and art—that continues to define Notting Hill.
The walk concludes with an intimate 30-minute talk at Portobello Shack, featuring:
- Rosita Lynch – Owner of Portobello Shack and goddaughter of Russell Henderson (commemorated with a blue plaque)
- Jamila Bolton – Daughter of Rhodan Gordon, one of the Mangrove Nine
- Community Elders – Local residents sharing firsthand stories and heritage knowledge
Optional: Stay to watch a short film about Carnival's history.
