Square dancing is a dance of four couples, or eight dancers in total, arranged in a square, with one couple on each side facing the middle of the square. It is a team dance effort where individuals perform sequences of moves, referred to as "calls," that are given out on the spot by a caller, acting much like "Simon Says" for adults -- all set to contemporary music. Dancers learn the definitions of these calls through lessons, progressing through various levels with increasing complexity. Square dancing is a listening activity that stimulates brain activity, requiring recollection and quick thinking, and offers multiple physical and mental benefits. It is a social and non-competitive dance where individuals do not need a dance partner, fostering a fun, trusting, sober environment and allowing participants to make new friends.
