Musicians and Biographies:
Moon Unit:
Steph Tamas is a saxophonist, composer, and improviser based in New York City. His saxophone playing is primarily in the contemporary/living music field which promotes premiering new works, collaboration, improvisation across all styles, and performance art. As a composer, most of his work is conceptual and encourages a love for learning and laughing. Outside of music, Steph enjoys weightlifting, basketball, comedy shows, and exploring.
Olivia Katz is a joyful, engaging, and dynamic cellist, improviser, and composer with a passionate interest in contemporary classical music. Olivia strives to create an interactive, inventive, and accessible environment in which the audience is encouraged to experience classical music, art, and beauty through a new lens. In addition to musicians and composers, Olivia collaborates with playwrights, singers, painters, actors, sculptors, and poets in multiple contexts and is dedicated to bringing artists’ visions to life. In 2024 Olivia received their Master of Music in Contemporary Classical Music Performance at the Boston Conservatory at Berklee under Rhonda Rider and David Russell, and in 2019 their Bachelor of Music in Cello Performance at the University of Puget Sound under Alistair MacRae. Currently in Boston, Olivia privately teaches many cello students in the greater-Boston area and is the cellist in the Semiosis Quartet–a Boston-based string quartet dedicated to presenting a captivating and diverse contemporary classical repertoire. Outside of cello performance, Olivia has been a camp counselor, a nanny, and worked at a thrift store; they especially enjoy being in nature, seeing live music, and exploring museums and antique stores.
SUTUR:
Aaron Michael Smith (viola, electronics) is a composer, violist and artist currently based in Boston, MA. Aaron is interested in exploring the way that various practices and mediums overlap, reflect and contradict one another. A large part of his practice since 2012 has been making experimental films which have gone on to be featured at numerous international film festivals. In 2023, Aaron did the music for their first feature-length film, Playland, which premiered internationally at the International Film Festival Rotterdam, and nationally at the Tribeca Festival. Aaron is a co-curator, along with Jordan Kokot, of field|guide, a collaborative multimedia art book project. Aaron is one third of grein, a transcontinental experimental improv trio, with Jay Rauch and Jonathan Rodriguez, with one release on Dinzu Artefacts. In 2024 Aaron co-founded a music series/experimental curation space called TRANSPORTER with Jessica Hernandez, hosted at Boston Cyberarts Gallery in Jamaica Plain.
Jessica Hernandez is a DJ, sound artist, and curator broadly interested in repetition and continuity, the sounds of industrial objects and materials, and visceral percussive arrangements. Using approaches including hardware synthesis and sample manipulation, Jessica often creates erratic sequences and experimental drum patterns. In doing so, she pulls together the various elements that draw her to electronic music while constructing her own particular vision of brooding experimental techno. In 2024, she and Aaron Michael Smith founded Transporter, an experimental music series located at the Boston Cyberarts Gallery. She also hosts a mix series/radio show Project One on 102.9FM and serves as the Managing Director of Unbound Visual Arts.
