About this Event
Cozy third Place is proud to co-host the first Human Library in South Bay, Los Angeles.
The is an initiative where people, instead of books, are "borrowed" for conversations. The aim is to create a safe framework to engage inconversations, dialogue, and an engaged experience leading to greater empathy, understanding, and openness to diversity and inclusion.
Books share their experiences or chapters of being stigmatized, misunderstood, marginalized, discriminated against by society, friends & family, their workplace and/or the media.
How It Works:
- A "reader" (visitor) selects a "human book" based on a title that reflects their story (examples "Former Gang Member," "Survivor of Depression") - these are just examples, what exacts books are available will be knowin only when the reader comes to the library.
- The reader and the book engage in a one-on-one conversation, where the reader can ask questions and learn about the book’s lived experiences.
- The goal is to foster understanding, empathy, and dialogue around often-misunderstood identities or life experiences.
Origin:
The Human Library concept was started in Denmark in 2000 by a group called Stop the Violence as a way to reduce conflict and promote social cohesion. Since then, it has expanded globally, with events held in libraries, schools, workplaces, and festivals.
