Mark your calendars — the San Mateo County History Museum is making it easy (and free!) to spend a Friday learning something new. As part of its popular FREE First Fridays program, sponsored by Monterra Credit Union, the Museum opens its doors all day on April 3 at no cost to visitors.
But the day isn't just about wandering the galleries (though that alone is worth the trip). Two special programs are on the schedule, and they're free too.
At 11 am, bring the little ones for a preschool program centered around Earth Day. Museum staff will lead the kids into the Nature's Bounty exhibit for a reading of Black Beach: A Community, an Oil Spill, and the Origin of Earth Day. It's a wonderful way to introduce young children to conservation, community, and why Earth Day exists in the first place.
At 2 pm, adults can join Museum docents for a guided tour of the museum. Whether you've been here before or it's your first visit, there's always something new to discover in a building that's a landmark in its own right — the stunning 116-year-old Old Courthouse right in the heart of Redwood City.
The San Mateo County History Museum, located at 2200 Broadway in Redwood City, explores centuries of Peninsula life — from the Ohlone people who first called this land home, to the natural resources that shaped it, the communities that grew here, and the innovations that put Silicon Valley on the map. It's history that actually feels personal.
The Museum is open Tuesday through Sunday, 10 am to 4 pm. For more information, visit www.historysmc.org or call 650-299-0104.
