Craftivism is the act of creating through craft (for this class: cross-stitching and embroidery) and using the craft to make a statement.
In this free class, teens (ages 13-18) will learn the craft forms of cross-stitch and embroidery and develop artwork that makes a statement about something they're passionate about, culminating in a pop-up show at Creative Haverhill's 43 Washington Street downtown community art space.
Students will be working with local artist, Joanna Corea. Joanna is a fiber artist, librarian, and musician whose creative practice weaves together craft, community, and advocacy. She has taught multiple Craftivism classes, empowering others to use fiber arts as a tool for social expression and change. Most recently, her work was in Alive: A Night of Resistance and Resilience through Creative Haverhill. Joanna believes everyone is an artist. She has a passion for working with children and teens and helping them make their voices heard through art.
This class is being offered for free thanks to a generous Youth Activity & Mental Health Grant awarded by the City of Haverhill. We appreciate the support!
