About the Event
Jazz for the Soul is excited to present the Angelo Versace quartet! Angelo has been with us multiple times and is a crowd favorite. Tonight, he brings his quartet of AZ all-stars, including Jason Carder - trumpet, Dom Moio - drums, and Scott Black - bass. Classic jazz at its finest, and will it swing? Absolutely!! Don’t miss this show, and bring your friends.
Angelo Versace has been described as “a fleet-fingered keyboard dynamo.” And Mulgrew Miller describes him as “A brilliant jazz talent - His receptivity, seriousness, and his ability to execute ideas simple or complex, combined with his love and feel for the substance of jazz, reveal why he is an exceptional artist.”
From humble beginnings, Versace’s passion has led him on an inspiring journey around the globe, playing at world-class festivals and venues alongside internationally recognized performers. He’s performed on 12 albums, two as a leader, and ten as a sideman, ranging from classical to jazz, gospel, and sacred jazz. He is currently working on a recording project with Khristian Dentley of Take 6.
Versace is not just a performer, but also a highly respected educator with a doctorate in Musical Arts. He now serves as Director of Jazz at the University of Arizona in Tucson. He says, “To me, the bandstand is a sacred place. When the musicians are on that bandstand, they are serious, no matter how informal the setting might be.” His commitment to jazz education is as strong as his passion for performing.
Dom Moio – Phoenix’s first call drummer, is known for his skill as a performer, band leader, and educator. Dom spent thirty years teaching on the Jazz faculty at ASU and has contributed as a sideman to over 100 recording projects. He’s produced several CDs of his own, “I Got Cha Drums Right Here” and “Cinco De Mayo” are fan favorites. Dom’s joy and enthusiasm is infectious when he plays.
Jason Carder – His dynamic personality and nimble talent on the trumpet allow Jason to move fluidly from intimate jazz clubs to international concert stages before audiences of thousands. He’s contributed to over 125 albums, including Grammy award-winning “Hot House”. Jason studied music at the University of Miami and now teaches at the University of Arizona. He holds a M.M. in Studio Music and Jazz Performance.
Scott Black – Scott graduated from Indiana University, moved to New York, and then to Chicago to hone his bass skills in those vibrant jazz scenes. Scott has an extensive background in education and uses his expertise as a soloist and as a part of the rhythm section to help students learn the jazz language. He is the co-owner of the Tucson Jazz Institute. A world-class, award-winning music school dedicated to producing the finest future jazz players.
